about

miscellany

this site has info. through 2005 or so. please see here for more current stuff.

i'm a composer | musician | sound artist at the university of virginia in charlottesville, where i teach courses in composition, music & technology, and related topics in the mcintire department of music.

i make several different kinds of music, usually combining electronics and computers with live production of sound by people. my music often [though not always] shies away from familiar sorts of exposition, hanging out at the makes sense / doesn't make sense border. it usually tinkers with the social, etc. narratives that attend Music, too.

i've collaborated with some mondo artists -- rebekah wostrel, nathan lynch, mike houston, nathan labudde and dylan bolles; and with dancer / choreographers ann robideaux and paula plessas. musician collaborators include aurie hsu, shahzad ismaily, danny tunick, and kojiro umezaki. sometimes these collaborations have involved building stuff [yum] -- [um] like at perry cook's soundlab. i'm working now with the poet jean valentine on a variety of text-sound pieces.

i hold degrees in music, electronic music and recording media, and composition from dartmouth college [a.b.], mills college [m.f.a.] and princeton university [m.f.a., ph.d] respectively. for more on teachers see here.

i also play all kinds of guitar, run long distances, watch c-span now and then, and try to rally against auto-pilot in general. [here's more biographical & vitae stuff.]

the music and video on this site assume you have a high-speed connection, and the video is mp4 -- so if you don't have it, you would need to install quicktime from apple [it's free]. if you want to listen / see but you don't want to deal with this technology, send me email and i'll try to get something to you...

thanks for visiting my page! please feel free to send me email: ejc3q @ [ virginia.edu ].
