Brood X Periodical
Cicadas - 2004 Princeton, NJ These images and sounds were collected in the area of Princeton, NJ, during late May and early June of 2004. These beautiful creatures have taken over the sonic space of our region, and transformed the soundscape in miraculous ways. Walking from place to place, it is fascinating to listen to the variety of different densities, volume levels, and blends. It is clear that these creatures change their song drastically with time of day, temperature, light levels, and even the presence of other ambient noises in the area. For instance, in areas of high levels of sound - they seem to sing louder in order to drown out competing noises. It is my hope (and obsession) to collect a few interesting sound recordings and photographs of these lovely creatures before they disappear for the next 17 years.
