Lasso and Corral: Variations on an Ill-Formed Meter
Click-track software instructions
dan trueman
- download
and unzip this file (should unzip
automatically, but if not just double-click on it).
- move
the entire folder into your Applications folder
- open
the Terminal application (in the Applications/Utilities folder)
- in the
Terminal window, type: cd
/Applications/LassoCorral_dist
- then
hit return and type: ./[yourinstrumentnamehere]
- so, ./violin, ./piano, or ./bassclarinet
- after
hitting return, you should see some text appear in the terminal window,
and then another window open. This will all take about 30 seconds. If all
goes well, youÕll see something sorta like this.
Ignore the controls at the bottom of the window; you wonÕt
need them. Hitting the space bar will start the click, and you should hear a
pitched click and see the green spoke begin to rotate clockwise.
Some points:
- the
downbeat comes when the green spoke points, uh, down; each cycle is one
measure.
- spacebar
stops/starts click.
- right
arrow will move forward to the next rehearsal letter.
- left
arrow will move back to previous rehearsal letter.
- there
will be a red flash on each downbeat; should be easily visible out of the
corner of your eye.
- you
should be able to see in the Terminal window each bar number as it
progresses, and also rehearsal letters as you reach them or cue them with
the arrow buttons.
- to
kill the program, hit control-C while in the Terminal.
- for practicing
purposes, you can just hit the spacebar to stop/start and use the arrows
to move around the piece. When we rehearse together, I will control all
this over the network with a footpedal.
- youÕll
definitely want to hear this through something bigger than the built-in
laptop speakers (weÕll work out how to handle this when we
rehearse/perform)
and if youÕve made it this far and everything actually
works, I am seriously stoked! Funfunfun!!!
if this DOES NOT work and you just want to listen to the
click to practice, you can download this Quicktime
movie. it does not have the visual component, but it has chapters for each
rehearsal letter so you can move around through the piece and get used to the
time warping in the various sections. should be playable on Windows or Mac with
Quicktime Player.
