COMPUTER and ELECTRONIC MUSIC COMPOSITION

MUS 316
Fall 2004

REQUIREMENTS and GRADING
There will be four composition projects during the semester and a final project (to be presented at a final concert in Taplin Auditorium (tentatively) on January 14). Late assignments will *not* be accepted; exceptions will be granted only due to extenuating circumstances, of which we must be notified by your Dean, Advisor, or Doctor. You will be expected to not only do your own projects but to respond to other’s projects during class and precept; this kind of interaction is vital (all projects will be ftp’d to our server as mp3 files, and you will be able to download and listen to your colleague’s work before precepts). The weighting will be as follows:

--In-semester Projects: 48%
--Class/Precept Participation: 26%
-- Final Project: 26%

SYLLABUS
The following is a rough weekly outline of topics and projects for the semester:
--Week 1 (9.13): Introduction to the studios, protools, recording, sound-effect libraries
--Week 2 (9.20): Working with soundfiles, introduction to MSP
--Week 3 (9.27): Sampling
--Week 4 (10.4): Sequencing/algorithms
--Week 5 (10.12): Interactive systems
--Week 6 (10.28): Newton: SC, interactive stuff

Midterm Break

--Week 7 (11.1): More interactive stuff, some DSP
--Week 8 (11.8): More DSP
--Week 9 (11.15): Frequency Domain stuff
--Week 10 (11.22): Some synthesis
--Week 11 (12.2): Reverb/Compression
--Week 12 (12.9): last session; final topics

Project Due Dates:
Projects will be due on staggered weeks, to alleviate the burden on studio time, and also to allow more time in precepts to talk about people’s work. What we need to do is divide each precept into two groups, say A and B. The project deadlines will be as follows: .

Group A
--Project 1 (Mix Your Own): 9/21
--Project 2 (Roll Your Own Sampler): 10/12
--Project 3 (Working Interactively): 11/9
--Project 4 (The Kitchen Sink): 11/30
Group B
--Project 1 (Mix Your Own): 9/28
--Project 2 (Roll Your Own Sampler): 10/19
--Project 3 (Working Interactively): 11/16
--Project 4 (The Kitchen Sink): 12/7

These projects must be ftp’d, in mp3 format, to the music server. The mp3s must arrive by midnight on the due date. Ideally, you will also have some time to check out your colleague’s work before precept.
Final Composition officially due Dean’s Date, presented in Taplin Auditorium on (tentatively) Friday, January 14.
