COMPUTER and ELECTRONIC MUSIC COMPOSITION

MUS 316
Fall 2004

OVERVIEW

This will be a hands-on composition course, focusing on the use of digital technology to create new music. Lectures and precepts will combine technical introductions to topics such as mixing, signal processing, algorithmic composition, synthesis, sampling, and interface metaphors, with listening and discussion of compositional issues. We will work with a range of software, including ProTools, Max/MSP, Digital Performer, MachFive, SoundHack, and others. There will be four composition projects focusing on particular problems during the course of the semester, and a final composition project which will be presented at a special Music 316 concert on January 14 (tentatively) in Taplin Auditorium.
