Inside/Out (Trinidad #1)
First Street Gallery, Trinidad, Colorado
July 21 - August 6, 2006

Inside/Out is a site-specific interactive audiovisual installation; its first iteration was created in and for Trinidad, Colorado using sounds and images gathered in the city. Inside Out works as a real-time audio mixer controlled by the movement of people's shadows upon a video projection. As visitors walk in front of a projector, the shadows they cast on the projection activate and control the work's soundtrack, engaging visitors in a choreography mediated by sound and creating a sense of community within the space of the work. The central theme of the work is the magical assumption of a 'shadow identity' and the social and sonic exploration this affords. Many thanks go to Perry Cook for helping this piece become a reality.

Visitors to Inside/Out manipulate sound files by moving their shadows throgh a projection field, alone or together. As they explore their shadow's movements against slowly changing projected images, participants improvise evolving soundscapes. The number of participants is limited only to the size of their shadows on the screen. Comfortable listening and watching spots are offered for those who aren't currently playing.
