MUS 106: Music Theory through Performance and Composition Second semester theory course. Composition of small pieces for various instrumental ensembles; analysis and discussion of simple pieces; and various exercises involving aspects of music such as phrases, dynamics, articulation, form and development of ideas. Harmonic vocabulary enhanced through further study of modulation and chromaticism. Special emphasis given to the imitative procedures of the Renaissance and Baroque, and the canonical forms of the Classic period and early nineteenth century. MUS 205: Species Counterpoint An introduction to the principles of voice leading and linear construction through a series of systematic compositional exercises.
