Graduate Seminar in Music Since 1945 Intensive study of contemporary art music from just after World War II to the present. Influential works by composers such as Stockhausen, Berio, Ligeti, Boulez, Cage, Kurtag, Zorn, Messiaen, Reich, Carter, Scelsi, Crumb and others will be closely examined and the most important stylistic developments in the last fifty years, such as minimalism, microtonality, indeterminacy, integral serialism, the New Complexity, electronic, and spectral composition will be investigated
   
Preparation for Music Theory An introduction to the basic elements of music study, including triads, seventh chords, figured bass symbols, basic principles of good chord construction and voice leading. Also, an overview of the contrapuntal underpinnings of music, through a brief study of species counterpoint. Texts: Damschroder, Foundations of Music and Musicianship and Fux, Gradus ad Parnassus.
 
Theory I The first course in the undergraduate theory sequence. Text: Aldwell/Schachter, Harmony and Voice Leading.
   
Theory II Continuing the study of principles of voice leading, analysis, composition, and performance of tonal harmony. Text: Aldwell/Schachter, Harmony and Voice Leading.
   
Theory III Continuing the study of principles of voice leading, analysis, composition, and performance of tonal harmony, with a special focus on chromatic harmony, tonicization, and mixture. Text: Aldwell/Schachter, Harmony and Voice Leading.
   
Theory IV The final course in the undergraduate theory sequence. In this course students get an introduction to analyzing and composing music following trends of the twnetieth century. Text: Burkhart, Anthology for Musical Analysis.
   
Keyboard Harmony A required course for all music majors. Students learn basic keyboard skills as well as the introductory principles of common practice period harmony and voice leading, learn to harmonize simple melodies, and to transpose lengthy harmonic progressions at the keyboard.
