SPELL (2007) For string trio, flute and harp; premiered by the Nash Ensemble at Richardson Auditorium, Princeton (pictured, left). I might have written this piece in a previous life. Two hesitantly approach one another and after exhausting one another keel over. The softness and caprice of Ravel. There are (of course) tremendous harp glissandos: we can all pretend to be majestic. Persistence is sometimes, but not always, a virtue. The ghost of Charles Ives is invoked, and the bell rings eleven times: mystery spelling hope. Spell was written for the Nash Ensemble in the fall and winter of 2006. 8 minutes, 50 seconds right-click or control-click HERE to download file |
